Performance anxiety is a very real experience that can be incredibly debilitating, particularly in high-stakes situations like sports. It manifests as a combination of physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms—racing heart, shaky hands, negative thoughts, and a fear of failure—that can severely impact an individual’s ability to perform at their best.

Interestingly, some research suggests that practicing gratitude may help mitigate the effects of anxiety. The idea is that when you actively focus on gratitude—whether it’s appreciating past achievements, acknowledging supportive relationships, or recognizing the opportunity in front of you—it can shift your mindset away from fear and worry. Gratitude grounds you in the present moment, allowing you to focus on positive aspects rather than potential failure or negative outcomes.

In fact, there’s evidence to suggest that it may be neurologically difficult to experience both anxiety and gratitude simultaneously. Gratitude activates parts of the brain associated with feelings of contentment and positive emotional processing, which contrasts with the brain’s response to anxiety, where fear and stress take center stage.

We often discuss timing when it comes to the mechanics of the golf swing, as well as the importance of the delivery position—when the club is parallel to the ground just before impact. A key objective is to position the club as close to the swing plane as possible, with the clubface square to the target. This reduces the need for last-second adjustments through the hitting zone, allowing for a more consistent strike and a higher chance of hitting the ball toward the intended target.

Congratulations to Team Crenshaw, captained by Joe Sheren, on winning the 8th Annual SMART CUP! This year's event was hosted at Hidden Creek Golf Club in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. Participants enjoyed 4 days of championship golf. The Ryder Cup style matches went down to the very last match with SMARTGOLF member, Bert Winston securing the final point to reclaim the cup from Team Coore, captained by Tommy Asuma.

Without consistent and appropriate feedback—whether from a coach, video, or mirror—it’s rare for a student, especially early in the learning process, to take a lesson, practice unsupervised, and have that practice be as effective as it could be. Ideally, we’d communicate the objective, the student would interpret it correctly, and they’d execute it with precision. However, that’s seldom the case. It often takes hours of coaching and supervision before the student can perform the drill or exercise in a way that leads to meaningful pattern changes.
