November 13, 2020Why the SMART Golf & Fitness Initial Assessment is Necessary
Proper initial assessment and evaluation is critical in most lines of work. What would you think of your doctor if you went to see them for back pain, and they wrote you a prescription without asking any questions, allowing you to speak, looking at your history, or properly evaluating you? Evaluating movement patterns and swing characteristics is just as important to improve in golf as it is for a doctor to correctly evaluate and diagnose your symptoms. You need to evaluate the symptoms of your golf swing, and faulty movement patterns, in order to properly diagnose the problem, the swing fault, or incorrect movement pattern. This evaluation is critical to being able to write the correct prescription, swing corrections, and proper training program. Without thorough evaluation and assessment, you’re just guessing what the problem is. That leaves you hoping that whatever the latest swing drill or exercise you saw on Instagram will fix your problem.
An assessment, when done correctly, will break down all parts of the golf swing into simple, quantifiable movements. The key word being quantifiable, an assessment should provide a baseline of objective numbers, whether it be in terms of degrees of range of motion at a specific joint, or the face angle of the golf club at impact. When collecting this data through the assessment process, our instructors, and fitness professionals, will have a benchmark for measuring success. This allows our team to evaluate whether the prescription, the necessary corrections, and the training program are working.
The assessment process is something that every single member here at SMART Golf & Fitness Instruction has to go through. It is a key value and core concept that makes SMART different. The importance of the assessment process ties into several other aspects that are paramount for your ability to improve and make the most of your time here at SMART. One of those aspects being, the importance of feedback. Our golf and fitness instructors teach you exactly what is going wrong in your swing and movement patterns. They will also teach you how to use the continuous feedback provided here to fix those faults. This allows you to practice on your own time, know exactly what you’re working on, how to fix it, and how to interpret what the numbers and feedback is telling you.
You cannot be certain of any faulty movement pattern being corrected without having properly evaluated it first. It’s as simple as that. Here at SMART Golf & Fitness Instruction we leave nothing to chance. We never guess at the problem, we assess, analyze, and give the right prescription.
